WHAT ARE MAMMALS?

Mammals are vertebrate animals who nourish their young with milk.
All mammals and birds are warm-blooded. Most mammals have hair on their bodies which moults to be
thin in the summer and thick in the winter. They also have a big brain inside their alert head, which enables them to learn quickly from experience, and retain memory so that they can undertake quite complicated tasks such as finding a safe home and food. They have a strong internal skeleton of bones, including toes on four limbs, plus a tail which, like the ears, can be obvious. They can control their body heat over wide range of weather conditions. Mammals have adapted to life in woodland, rivers, estuaries, seas, land, air, mountains and even the desert.
