Rome grew from a small kingdom in Italy. It became a republic and one of the mightiest empires of the ancient world, with an empire stretching the length of the Mediterranean Sea. At its peak, the Roman Empire
stretched from Britain in the west to Mesopotamia in the east. The army defended this empire well. Rome rose to power thanks to its fertile farmland, its army and its key position in the middle of Italy. As well as fighting, Roman soldiers built roads, forts and aqueducts. Most people accepted Roman rule without question, because of the benefits it brought, letting them farm and trade in peace.
